Exploring Physics Through Family Fun: Special Thank you to IOP

At Make More, we’ve been thrilled to deliver a range of engaging, family-friendly workshops funded by the Institute of Physics (IOP). These events have been designed to inspire curiosity and a love of physics among children and their parents or carers. Here’s a look back at what we’ve accomplished so far and a sneak peek at what’s coming up!

Starting with Community Outreach

We kicked off our project by connecting with the community during local events such as the Black History Month Celebration Event and a Fire Charity Walk. These gatherings gave us the opportunity to engage with people of all ages, share our passion for physics, and spark conversations about how science impacts our everyday lives.

Wind to Watts Workshop

Our first workshop, "Wind to Watts," invited children and their parents to collaborate on building wind turbines capable of powering LED lights. Together, they learned about renewable energy, the mechanics of wind turbines, and the science of electricity generation. The hands-on experience allowed families to discover the real-world applications of physics in tackling global challenges.

Robot Challenge

Next, we hosted the "Robot Challenge," where families designed and built robots capable of moving and performing tasks. Through this workshop, participants explored principles of motion, force, and mechanical engineering. It was inspiring to see teams working together

to solve challenges and bring their robotic creations to life.

Santa's STEM Workshop

In December, our "Santa’s STEM" event brought festive cheer with a physics twist. Families competed to build and race the fastest sleigh for Santa while learning about motion, force, and gravity. Participants also used virtual reality to explore new realms and discovered the fun of static electricity by making tinsel float or repel with balloons. The combination of holiday spirit and STEM exploration made for an unforgettable experience.

Mission to Mars Workshop

One of our most exciting workshops, "Mission to Mars," challenged families to design and test Mars rovers on simulated Martian terrain. This activity encouraged children to think critically about space exploration and the skills required to engineer successful rovers. It was a fantastic way to inspire interest in physics and engineering careers while fostering creativity and teamwork.

Upcoming Workshops

The excitement continues with two upcoming workshops:

  1. Health Inventors Lab – Taking place on February 20, 2024, from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, this workshop will delve into health-related innovations and the physics behind them.

To book your place visit our website: https://www.make-more.org/event-details/inventors-health-lab

  2. F1 Workshop – Later this month, we’ll collaborate with a local F1 in Schools team to deliver an exhilarating workshop focused on speed, aerodynamics, and the physics of racing.

Why Family Workshops Matter

Our workshops aim to provide a shared learning experience where children and their parents or carers can explore physics concepts together. By combining education with fun, we hope to inspire the next generation of physicists and problem solvers while creating meaningful family memories.

Thank You, Institute of Physics

A big thank you to the Institute of Physics for supporting these workshops. With their funding, we’ve been able to bring physics to life for families across the community and encourage a deeper understanding of the world around us.

We can’t wait to see you at our future events and continue this journey of discovery and learning!
